On 1 July 2020, given the health emergency then underway, the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life issued a circular letter announcing the Holy Father's granting of the “extraordinary faculty” to derogate from canons 127 and 166, for individual cases submitted to the Dicastery's evaluation, giving the possibility of using computerized-telematic tools in reference to meetings of the Superior’s Council.
On 19 March 2023, the Dicastery issued a new circular letter summarizing the experience of the past three years. The circular reads in part that “the use of computerized tools has proven to be a valuable support to governance; an experience that is open to the future while being aware of adequate training in this area and the responsibilities that such use entails.”
